Hiking.... The Katahdin Lake area has several possible hikes available. Short hikes include trails to Painters Beach, Rocky Pond and Pitcher Plant Pond. Some what longer is the Martin Pond loop trail and the North Katahdin Lake Trail. Baxter State Park also has plans to open a hiking trail from the north end of Katahdin Lake to Twin Ponds in 2011.
Further afield, a days climb up South Turner Mountain on a clear day will reward the hiker with wonderful views of Mt. Katahdin and Katahdin Lake. A trip to Chimney Pond is another great day hike from the camps and Sandy Stream Pond is also a favorite destination.
Thinking of a climb to the summit of Mt. Katahdin during your stay at Katahdin Lake Wilderness Camps? If so, we recommend you do not consider attempting it in one day. Please click on the thumbnail image to the right for further information from Baxter State Park. For guests who would like to plan an overnight trip up Katahdin or elsewhere in the park, we would be happy to assist and answer any questions you may have. Please email us for details and information.
